This lovely 2001 Pekingese figurine has the extravagant, long, straight-flowing coat with profuse feathering that this breed is famous for. The Pekingese gets his name from the ancient city of Peking, now called Beijing. Chinese legend has it that the breed is the offspring of a lion and a monkey; but in truth are believed to be close relatives of the Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu. Once carried by Chinese royalty in the sleeves of their robes, the tiny Pekingese were given the nickname of "Sleeve Dogs."
