True seals are called Pinnipeds and are distinguished from the sea lions (also Pinnipeds) by the fact that they do not have external ear flaps, just tiny openings for hearing, and shorter flippers with claws. Unlike sea lions, their hind flippers cannot be used for forward motion, meaning that they drag themselves along with their front flippers and belly.
